A birthday surprise for Daisy: With the baby due dangerously close to Daisy's birthday I was keen to organise something special in advance to make sure I didn't miss out on the celebrations. This time last year we celebrated Daisy's 30th birthday in true style in a chateau in France, so deciding where was a challenge. Daisy had mentioned that she was keen to take Jon (her hubby) to The Hand & Flowers in Marlow but was surprised to learn that they had a six month waiting list for a table on Friday/Saturday & Sunday. Those of you that know me, will know that it makes me even more determined to get a table.
My persistence paid off & I managed to secure a table of 4 for 6.45 - 8.45 on 11/10, three weeks before Daisy's actual birthday but I always celebrate my birthday for about a month so why not. Jon took Daisy on the London train from Brighton & Daisy was messaging me all excited about her surprise, little did she know we where waiting at a few stops down the line to collect them with a chilled bottle of champagne for the journey. We didn't arrive at the restaurant until 6.45 due to heavy Friday traffic but the chilled Laurent Perrier champagne on arrival soon distracted us from the long car journey. We where delighted to hear that The Hand & Flowers had just been voted best restaurant in the UK, which made the experience even more exciting. The staff were extremely attentive & the food was amazing. Pre starter we were presented with a gorgeous selection of bread, whitebait with a Marie Rose sauce & beautiful vegetarian salads for Daisy & Jon. We especially loved the wooden presentation of the butter, very theatrical! Our main courses were equally divine, I couldn't resist the great british menu duck, wow! Ben had a steak, Daisy a vegetarian tart & Jon an omelette.. All presented beautifully & utterly delicious. I also managed to squeeze in a pear soufflé, Ben a chocolate & ale cake & Daisy 1/2 a Creme brûlée, ok I admit I helped her with this too! Sadly Tom Kerridge was attending another event and not returning until the Saturday but the boys were delighted to be offered a guided tour of the kitchen & a good chat with the head chef... It was wonderful to have a child-free evening, a HUGE Thank you to Jaja & Nanna, giving us the opportunity to relax & have fun... I would highly recommend The hand & Flowers and I hope one day to get back for Sunday lunch & to meet the fabulous Tom Kerridge! Happy Birthday BBP - Michelle X
